The Best-known Mountains in Southeast China


Among the 10 famous mountain ranges in China, Yandang Mountains, composed of North Yandang, Middle Yangdang and South Yandang, are crowned as the Best-known Mountains in


Southeast China. Lingfeng Peaks, Lingyan Rock and Dragon Pond Waterfalls are listed as the top 3 views of the range.


The development of Yandang Mountains started in the Northern and Southern dynasties and prospered in the Tang and Song dynasties. The history over 1,500 years witnesses the accumulation of more than 7,000 poems, 2,000 travel essays and 370 cliff carvings left in the mountains. Xu Xiake (1587-1641), a famous geographical scholar in the Ming Dynasty (13681644), had visited Yandang for three times, and later in Xu Xiakes Travel Notes presented a delicate description of the mountain range, watercourses, and features of the scenery there.




The Cradle of Chinese Landscape Poetry


Nanxi River, situated in Yongjia County in the north of Wenzhou City, covers an area of 671 square kilometers. It is approved as the national 4A-rated tourist attraction and the world geological park. Whats more, it is honored as the Best Water in the World and the Cradle of Chinese Landscape Poetry. Well-known for its water, rockeries, waterfalls, ancient villages and beach forests, the 150,000-meter long river, encompassing 7 scenic sites and over 800 spots, has turned itself into a perfect combination of both natural and cultural resources.


For more than one thousand years, the area has cultivated its ancient gengdu, furrow civilization. Xie Lingyun (385-433) ,governor of Yongjia County since 422, wrote a vast number of


poems, delineating the breathtaking scenery of Nanxi River and Oujiang River. In his poems, Xie introduced to the poetry in the Southern Dynasty the elements of natural scenery and pastoral views, hence gained his fame as the originator of Chinese landscape poetry.






The Worlds Ancient Beacon for Navigation


As one of the four most famous islets in China, Jiangxin Islet gained its reputation as the island of poetry in China and ancient beacon for navigation in the world. The islet, rich in scenic beauty and historic relics, is a fairyland on Oujiang River, with the East Pagoda and the West Pagoda reflecting each other.


Renowned poets and celebrities of the past ages including Xie Lingyun (385-483), Meng Haoran (691-740), Han Yu (768-824), Lu You (1125-1210), and Wen Tianxiang (1236-1283), had visited the place in succession and left behind a collection of nearly 800 pieces of poetry, singing their praises to this islet.


Strolling around the islet, you will come across numerous historic relics of the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279).From every corner of these weathered time-worn epic buildings emits the islet's charm in each and every detail.





An Epitome of the Old Wenzhou


Ancient architectures at Wuma Street constitute an important memory of the local senior generation. The techniques and technologies applied in the constructions are of significant importance in both the industry and the history.


The recent years reconstruction and renovation of Wuma Street has brought more uniqueness and vitality to this historic cultural site. As a result, it has not only retained its original flavor of the ancient architectures, but also revived the commercial distribution around the area.






A Living Fossil of the World’s Printing


The Wooden Movable-type Printing of Dongyuan Village boasts a history of over 800 years. It is the only surviving technique ever known that has been passed down for so long. As a living fossil of printing in the world, it inherits the whole conventional craftwork in ancient China and vividly reflects the working situation of the movable type of printing.


On June 14, 2008, the technique was approved as a national intangible cultural heritage by the State Council. In 2010, Dongyuan wooden movable-type was included into the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Urgent Need of Protection.





The Living fossil of Papermaking in Ancient China


Siliandui Papermaking Workshop is located in the middle reach of Longxi Stream, Zeya Town, Ouhai District, Wenzhou City, and covers an area of 0.28 square kilometers. It is the living fossil of papermaking in ancient China and also the key cultural relic site under the state protection.


At the end of the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) and the beginning of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Nanping people migrated from Fujian to Zeya Town to seek refuge from the war. With the abundant bamboo resources in this town,these people resumed their old profession of making Nanping Paper. With water-powered trip hammer, they mashed the bamboos into shreds and pulp,with which they made paper. As there are thousands of people in Zeya Town engaged in the papermaking industry, the water-powered trip-hammers and papermaking workshops are easy to find there.

At last, dont forget to dip it in mustard or garlic first when you enjoy the crab.
